Notes from the National Research Committee Report

The Research Poster Session will have a new look this year.  For the 2008 National Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, poster boards will be provided. In this new format, each individual has the opportunity to develop her/his research poster via computer and bring the rolled-up poster to the conference much like a calendar to be pinned to the display board.  Or a researcher may develop the poster using regular 8 ½ x 11 paper(s) and bring them to the conference. Our exhibit contractor will supply 4' x 8' - two sided poster display boards, more as needed.  Posters can be attached with regular push pins.

In St. Louis, the National Research Committee will be sponsoring three sessions, all of which will emphasize evidence-based research. Dr. Eric Waldon will provide a session on measurement, Dr. Jane Cassidy and Dr. Jayne Standley will present continuing research with music and premature infants, and Dr. Dena Register will be presenting on her continuing work using music for reading instruction.

The AMTA Research Committee is pleased to announce a new grant funding opportunity
for clinical music therapists. Small grants, between $500 and $3000, will be offered to
encourage clinical music therapists to implement research studies as a part of their routine
fieldwork. This grant program complements AMTA’s existing portfolio of grant and
scholarship programs in that it aims to foster focused small scale research by music
therapists working in the field and emphasizes the current Research Strategic Priority of
the Association. Applicants must be clinicians and professional members of AMTA. Both
qualitative and quantitative music therapy studies will be considered. Studies that are
expected to result in peer-reviewed publications, published abstracts, or other
publications are encouraged. Research projects that meet one or more of the following
priorities are preferred: research projects that contribute to the development of evidence-
based practice guidelines and protocols; work that pilot tests new evidence-based music
therapy interventions or protocols in typical ‘real world’ field settings; work that
replicates existing evidence-based music therapy interventions or protocols in novel ‘real
world’ field settings; research that contributes information, benefits and economic
efficiency of music therapy among various populations and settings, and work that
contributes to the effective communication and dissemination of research finding to other
providers, payers and consumers.

Application materials are available a) online at the AMTA website in the members only
section; b) by contacting AMTA at (301) 589-3330, attention Dr. Clifford Madsen; or, c)
via e-mail request to infogmusictherapy.org and subject line, “Clinician-based grant
program”. Applications should be submitted to AMTA no later than October 1, 2007.

Research Committee - National Conference Session Sponsorship
The Research Committee will again host sessions at the National AMTA Conference in
Kentucky this year. The Research Poster Session will be one of these sessions. Members of
the Committee have recently reviewed submissions for research to be presented at this
session. A number of interesting studies were submitted for review.
